How to Get More Credit at Work When You're Doing the Most and Getting Noticed the Least

Make it make sense for me. How are you the most watched person in the room and the most overlooked person in the room at the same time?

If that sentence really struck a cord with you... I want to let you know that you are not crazy. You are not too sensitive.

And you are definitely not imagining the fact that you are working HARDER than everybody around you and somehow getting the least credit for it.

I lived this. So let me tell you what is actually going on, and what you can do about it. Because the credit is not just going to show up because you earned it.

I wish it worked that way. It does not. But there are ways to move so this stops happening to you, and that is what we are getting into.

Shaque'l helping someone on a laptop.

Why Isn't My Work Speaking for Itself.

So, how do you get more credit at work? here is the hard truth. Good work does not automatically get seen, and all that attention on you was never about catching your wins in the first place.

You would think being the most visible person in the room means more credit. More recognition. More people clocking all the amazing things you are pulling off.

Nope.

What I learned real quick is that the eyes were not there to catch me doing good.

They were not there to catch me doing well, or exceptional, or better than everybody else in the building. They were there to catch me. Watching for the slip.

The one misstep they could point to.

Your work is not a billboard that reads itself. If you are waiting to be noticed, you are going to be waiting a long time.

The double standard...

Let me name it plainly. Your one mistake becomes a whole thing. A meeting. A conversation. A note in your file.

Meanwhile Chad, Brad, and Thad fumble constantly and it is fine, because they have got a lot on their plate. Same error. Completely different grace. You already knew that. I just wanted you to hear somebody say it out loud.

Why Is My Excellence Treated Like the Bare Minimum?

Because somewhere along the way, your exceptional got quietly reclassified as expected, and nobody rewards what they already assume you will deliver.

The excellent thing. The exceptional thing. The thing you stayed late for and stressed over and pulled off anyway. Somewhere it stopped being impressive and became the baseline. Required, not requested.

And when excellence is the floor instead of the ceiling, nobody claps. Why would they clap for you doing what they have already decided you are just supposed to do?

How “that's just what you're supposed to do” teaches you to expect nothing

Here is the sneaky part. When your best keeps getting treated like the standard, you learn to stop bringing it up.

You accomplish something real, you get a little excited, and then you get reminded that that was the requirement. So you go quiet. You stop announcing your wins. And then you carry that same silence into the office and wonder why nobody notices. You trained yourself to expect nothing, and the workplace was happy to meet you right there.

Why Does My Win Suddenly Become “the Team's” Win?

Because credit nobody claims out loud floats straight to whoever is standing closest to leadership.

I always found it funny. It was all me when nobody was watching. All me in the late nights, the fixing, the figuring it out. And then the second it went well? Suddenly it is “the team did such a good job”.

Your contribution gets absorbed. Handed off. Folded into somebody else’s leadership story. Not because you did not do it, but because you did not put your name on it before somebody else put theirs.

“I didn't know you had it in you” is not the compliment they think it is

And can we talk about the shock? The wow, I did not know you had it in you.

That is not praise. That is somebody telling you they were surprised little old you could pull it off. Clock it. Every single time. Because the day you start hearing that clearly is the day you stop performing for people who were never really rooting for you.

How Do I Actually Start Getting Credit at Work?

You stop waiting to be noticed and start claiming what is yours out loud, in the moment, before it disappears into the team.

Now here is where I push us a little, with love. There is a difference between complaining about something and actually learning how to move so it stops happening. Venting feels good for a minute, but moving differently changes your whole next chapter. And I believe we deserve that second one.

So here is how you start.

Claim it in the moment. When the win happens, say what you did. Out loud. In the meeting, in the email, in the recap. Not arrogant. Just clear. Here is what I built, here is the result.

Name your specific piece before it dissolves. When the work goes well and the great job team starts flying, you get to say yes, and the part I owned was this. Specifics are yours. Vague credit belongs to whoever grabs it first.

Keep the receipts. Track your wins as they happen, not at review time when you cannot remember a thing. When it is time to ask for the raise, the promotion, the title, you walk in with evidence, not vibes.

Stop absorbing the backhanded stuff in silence. You do not have to clap back. But you do not have to smile and swallow it either. A simple “I am not surprised, this is the level I work” at repositions you in one sentence.

You are done settling for being overworked and ignored. Done letting excellent and exceptional get filed under bare minimum.

Complaining versus learning how to move

Real talk. You can spend another year venting about how they do not see you. It is valid. It is also not going to change your next review.

Or you can start moving differently. Naming your work, keeping your receipts, repositioning how people talk about what you do. One of those roads ends in the exact same place next year. The other one ends with your name on the thing, the raise in your account, and a seat in a different room.

You Don't Have to Figure This Out Alone

Now here is the part I have to be honest about. You can do all of this on your own. But it is a lot to carry by yourself, especially when you look around and nobody in your corner has navigated the exact thing you are navigating.

When you are doing better than anyone you came up with, there is often no one to call who has already been here. No blueprint. Just you, figuring it out in real time and hoping you are getting it right. That is heavy. And you were never meant to hold it by yourself.

That is the whole reason I built 6 Figure Network®. A room of women who just get it.

Where you do not have to explain the feeling, because everybody already knows exactly what is going on. And more than that, they know how to move past it. This is where you stop settling, stop shrinking, and start getting the credit, the money, and the room you actually earned.

Because that hard thing you pulled off? It never made it into your performance review or the group chat. But in here, we see it. And we will show you how to make sure everybody else does too.
